This position is located at the Barlow Ranger District of the Mt Hood National Forest. The duty station is Dufur, Oregon.
This position is responsible for performing technical duties in timber stand improvement, reforestation, and tree improvement. For additional information about the duties of these positions, please contact Sam Grimm at or .us.
This is a seasonal position. The incumbent will be guaranteed 13 pay periods of full-time work. However, there may be a possibility to work more. You will then be placed in non-pay/non-duty status for the remainder of the year.
The USDA Forest Service has legislative authority to recruit and fill Permanent (Career/Career-Conditional), Temporary, and Term Appointments under the USDA Demonstration Project. Under this authority, any U.S. citizen may apply.
This is a term, time-limited appointment with an initial duration no less than 13 months and can be extended up to a total of 4 years. USCITIZEN SSR PROBATION US Citizenship is required. Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959. A 1-year probationary period is required.
Performs Timber stand improvement surveys to determine stand conditions and the need for TSI treatments. Traverses project areas, determines acreage and drafts maps of those areas.
Serves as COR or inspector on specific contracts as assigned and/or supervises force account projects. Ensures all provisions are enforced and proper measures are taken to protect or enhance values in accordance with contract objectives. Prepares and submits related inspection reports, checks for compliance on needed corrective actions, and recommends final acceptance of the contract upon completion.
Performs surveys to determine degree and kind of animal and insect damage existing in assigned area. Assists in preparation of recurring reports associated with the unit TSI and reforestation program.
Develops the schedule and work plans for monitoring and inspecting TSI and reforestation activities.
Collects technical data needed to prescribe stand treatment; measurements include radial growth, basal area, site index, stand density, stand condition, etc. Based on field analysis, assists in preparation of the technical specifications for timber stand improvement, tree planting, brush release, or animal damage control contracts.

You must possess the Basic Requirements identified below.
For the GS-07 grade level, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-06 grade level; 1 full year of successfully completed graduate education (18 semester hours/27 quarter hours); and/or combinations of successfully completed graduate education and specialized experience. The education must be directly related to the position, such as a major in forestry, natural resources management, forest ecology, etc.
Examples of specialized experience are: Assisted in the preparation of project work plans for timber stand improvement and reforestation activities. Traversed project areas, determined acreage and drafts maps of those areas. Acted as COR on various silvicultural contracts. Conducted on-site observation of contractor or agency crews engaged in timber stand improvement or reforestation efforts. Inspected silvicultural contract work (e.g., genetic tree improvement, planting, thinning, seeding, site preparation) for compliance with contract. Corrected minor problems in direct contact with COR.
